Product Description
Saw palmetto (also known as Serenoa Repens) is a small palm plant that has been used for centuries for medicinal purposes.
Native to Central and South America, saw palmetto grows in subtropical climates and can grow for 500-700 years.
Native Americans traditionally ate saw palmetto berries to treat urinary and reproductive problems associated with an enlarged prostate.
They have also been used to treat cough, indigestion, sleep problems, and infertility.
Saw palmetto fruit extract is rich in carotenoids, lipase, tannins, sugars, and caprylic, palmitic, lauric, oleic and beta-sitosterol.
It contains the same abundance of fatty acids (85-90%) and sterols.
A combination of saw palmetto liposterolic extract and beta-sitosterol is the main active ingredient.
They also contain high molecular weight polysaccharides (sugars) that may reduce inflammation or boost the immune system.
Benefits of Saw Palmetto
1. Improvement of prostatic hyperplasia
Saw palmetto may help relieve symptoms of an enlarged prostate, such as difficulty urinating, increased urinary frequency, and nocturia.
Studies have shown that saw palmetto inhibits testosterone from binding to and stimulating prostate cells, which in turn inhibits the growth of prostate cells.
It has been shown to reduce proliferation and enlargement of the prostate.
While drug treatments for an enlarged prostate, alpha blockers and 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors can cause sexual dysfunction, saw palmetto is a natural supplement with few side effects.
2. Prevention of male hair loss
Saw palmetto can be used to improve hair loss caused by hormonal changes.
Studies suggest that saw palmetto may help with hair loss by blocking the conversion of testosterone to a hair loss-related hormone called di-hydro-testosterone (DHT).
Studies have shown that oral and topical supplements containing saw palmetto improved hair quality by 60%, increased total hair count by 27%, and increased hair density in 83% of hair loss patients.
3. Reduces inflammation
Saw palmetto contains the antioxidant epicatechin and methyl gallate, a compound that prevents cell damage, reduces inflammation and prevents chronic disease.
One study in rats with an enlarged prostate observed that saw palmetto extract reduced swelling and several markers of inflammation, including interleukin 6 (IL-6).
